The Freeplay Jonta Flashlight is a Hand Crank LED High Power flashlight, that delivers excellent light beam quality, brightness and shine time performance.  Built on trusted and failsafe Freeplay self-charge technology, the Freeplay Jonta incorporates state-of-the-art Luxeon 1 Watt Star LED illumination and intelligent circuitry all without the need for replaceable batteries.  Designed for absolute reliability, the self-charge system offers maximum dependability for those times when you can not afford to be left in the dark by dead batteries.  A quick wind of about 60 seconds gives approximately 10 minutes of light in energy saving mode and you can wind again at any time for as much shine-time as you want.  A charge level indicator tells you the optimal winding speed.

When fully charged, the lantern provides up to 12 hours of continuous ultra bright light.  This recharge system provides an optimum charge to the batteries, ensuring superior battery performance.  Microprocessor driven charge circuitry fully charges the Jonta in 6 hours.  A choice of 3 light settings offers flexibility for everyday use, and emergency situations.  An energy saving mode allows you to use the flashlight for extended periods at a reduced brightness, select maximum power where the ultra-bright beam is required or the flashing beacon for distress signaling.  The beam is useful for illuminating surfaces up to 50 m away, and has a signal visibility over 3 km.  The digital control circuit offers many other useful features including battery level indication, mode indication and a low battery warning that lets you know when to crank further to avoid being left in the dark.

Internal mechanical components are specified to industrial standards for repeated use and long life.  The solid state LED has a lifetime of up to 100 000 hours, ensuring that it, like the batteries, should never require replacement.  The Freeplay Jonta, incorporating Freeplays self-sufficient energy technology, is the most dependable performance flashlight on the market.

Power

Self-Charge

Freeplay's patented self-charge mechanism is the world's most efficient human energy conversion system.  The winder can be cranked in both directions and the harder you crank, the more energy you create.  A crank level LED indicates the optimum winding speed, but only limitation to how much energy you can create and store is you.

AC

With a suitable AC adapter (mini USB), you can charge the Jonta from the wall.  A 6-hour charge fully charges the flashlight.

An AC adapter (mini USB) is not included with this purchase however, you can use any "mini-USB" AC adapter.  Many newer cellphones and digital cameras use the same adapter, so you may already have one.

Battery level

Depressing the switch for 2 seconds displays the battery charge level.  A warning light flashes when the battery voltage is very low.

Light

The Jonta is equipped with a microprocessor-controlled 1-Watt super bright white LED.  A choice between "energy saving" and "full power" allows the user to choose shine time over light performance.  A third light setting offers a flashing beam that is ideal for emergency signaling.  The excellent beam quality from the Jonta maintains focus at over 50 m (55 yards).

The state of the art LED has a useful life of up to 100 000 hours, and burns as brightly as a powerful incandescent bulb while using a fraction of the energy.

Durability

The Freeplay self-charge system is built around a custom designed, highly efficient alternator.  The architecture of this patented system has been developed to maximize the ability of the user to convert human mechanical energy into stored electricity quickly and efficiently.

While the basis of Freeplay's superiority lies in the performance of this system, Freeplay has extended the engineering excellence to every aspect of the Jonta.

The winder handle is made from tough glass reinforced Nylon and is designed, along with the grip of the flashlight, for comfort and ease of use.

The transmission (gear train) is constructed to high manufacturing tolerances from glass reinforced Nylon and Acetyl dissimilar engineering plastics that dramatically increase the life of the gear train.  The transmission has undergone accelerated lifetime testing in excess of 500 000 cycles.

Under self-charge conditions the batteries receive a conditioning charge that negates the memory effect common to rechargeable batteries and similarly increases their useful life.  Accelerated lifetime tests on the batteries in the Freeplay self-charge system have reflected no significant capacity loss after 10 000 crank charge cycles.

The light source, a star mounted 1-Watt super bright white LED, is the state of the art in LED technology.  Superior light output places this LED in the realm of incandescent lamps but with significantly higher efficiency and lifetime (rated at up to 100 000 hours).

A microprocessor-controlled circuit drives the LED, ensuring optimum performance and lifetime.  This circuit also introduces enhanced user interface functionality, including battery level indication, low voltage warning, charge and LED mode indication.

FAQs

Do I need to do anything before I use it?
For best results, the battery requires a conditioning charge before first use, or after long periods without use.  This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles.  Alternatively this can be done by fully charging the battery using the wall adapter (if you have one).  The product can, however, be used immediately in the wind-up mode if required.
How do I change the light bulb?
The light is an LED (light-emitting diode) with up to 100 000 hours of useful life and never requires replacement.
How long will a fully charged battery retain its charge?
The battery will retain about 75% of its capacity after 1 month, 55% after 2 months, 40% after 3 months and 15% after 6 months.
Can I over-wind the unit - does it ever stop you from winding?
No, you cannot over-wind the internal mechanism.  It consists of simple gearing which drives the alternator, providing power to the internal battery.
Will I damage the product if I crank the handle in the opposite direction?
No, the winder handle can be cranked in both directions.
Is the product waterproof?
No, it is not waterproof.  It is splash proof and will work in rainy conditions.
How long should my Jonta shine for?
With a fully charged battery, the Jonta will shine for approximately 24 hours on normal beam (Energy Saving) or 2 1/2 hours on high beam.  A 30-second wind at 120 rpm will provide about 10 minutes of shine time on normal beam.
What is the indicator light for?
The indicator light is an optimum charge level indicator.  This means that it will only illuminate when you are winding the handle at the best speed to generate the ideal amount of energy.
How long does it take to fully charge the battery?
Using the wall adapter, it will take about 6 hours to fully charge the battery.  Or using the crank, it will take about 40 minutes, if you constantly wind at the optimum speed as indicated by the green charge level indicator.
What is the life span of the internal battery?
The internal battery is good for 500 cycles when fully charging the battery and 10 000 cycles when using the winder mechanism for 30 seconds.
Why is it named Jonta?
Freeplay Energy plc is committed to a world of responsible energy.  This commitment extends beyond the environmental impact mitigation of our products to the sustainable provision of energy in developing communities and humanitarian initiatives.  The names we choose for our products tell some of our stories:

Isolation is the greatest barrier to the alleviation of poverty.  Radio can reach those isolated by disease, geography, language, conflict, illiteracy or poverty.  Millions of dollars are spent each year to create developmental radio programming, yet the audience, the poor, may never hear it.  There is no electricity supply in most rural areas and the cost of batteries is prohibitive.  Critical information that can help prevent deadly diseases, improve hygiene, increase agricultural productivity, teach animal caring skills or warn of an impending flood may therefore never be heard.

Jontas father and mother died of AIDS leaving him to look after his five younger siblings, including a ten-month-old sister.  Jonta symbolizes a generation in the history of humankind that is growing up without parents  and there are millions of such children.  Built on the same trusted and dependable technology as this flashlight is Freeplay Energy plcs Lifeline radio, a multi-band, self-powered radio designed specifically for providing dependable access to information across a broad range of humanitarian projects.

The radio does not require batteries or mains electricity and can used anywhere.  Engineered to operate in the harshest of rural conditions, it is rugged, robust and easy to operate.  The Lifeline self-powered radio ensures sustainable access to radio to those most in need.  Jonta will always have a hard life.  However, for him and others like him, the Lifeline radio can offer the prospect of a better future  a future filled with information and knowledge of the outside world.
