Things to consider when buying Active Noise Cancelling Headphones

The dBs of noise cancelling is the most important number to consider along with the frequency range that noise
cancelling is functioning.
Is the noise cancelling all active or is some of it passive? Passive noise cancelling is obtained
by covering the ears(circumaural) with an insulated material that stops sound from reaching the ear drum. You can get
completely passive noise cancelling headphones at hardware stores for use when operating equipment that generates loud noise. Passive noise cancelling
normally reduces the external noise over the entire frequency range.
Can the noise cancelling be turned off when listening to music in a quiet environment?

The frequency over which the noise cancelling will operate is the next most important measure. Low frequency sound has the greatest impact when traveling
in planes, trains, buses. You want active cancellation from about 20 -2000 Hz. |

The decibel (dB) is used to measure sound level, but it is also used in electronics,
signals and communication. The dB is a logarithmic unit used to describe a ratio.
The ratio may be power, sound pressure, voltage or intensity.
A sound which is 10 times more intense is assigned a sound level of 10 dB.
A sound which is 100 times more intense is assigned a sound level of 20 db.
A sound which is 1000 times more intense is assigned a sound level of 30 db.
